Why Two Balls With the Same Carry Land Differently
Two wedges can carry the exact same distance in a session and produce completely different results on the green. The missing variable is almost always descent angle.
Carry distance measures how far the ball traveled through the air before it first touched the ground. It says nothing about the angle it was falling at when that happened. A ball descending at 38 degrees and a ball descending at 52 degrees can post an identical carry number and still behave like two completely different shots once they land.
Steep Vs. Shallow
A steeper descent angle drops the ball more directly downward, which tends to hold it closer to where it first lands. A shallower descent angle brings the ball in at more of a glancing angle, which tends to produce more forward roll after landing — sometimes a lot more, depending on green firmness and spin.
Why This Matters More on Some Clubs Than Others
For a driver, extra roll-out after landing is usually welcome — nobody complains about a tee shot that runs another 15 yards down the fairway. For a wedge or a mid-iron approach shot, the same extra roll can turn a well-struck shot into a putt from well off the green instead of the tap-in it should have been.
What Actually Changes Descent Angle
Loft is the biggest lever, but not the only one. Higher spin rates and slower ball speeds both tend to steepen descent angle, which is part of why a well-struck wedge often holds a green better than a thin one carrying the same distance — the thin strike usually comes in flatter, with less spin to steepen the fall.
Two wedges with identical carry numbers and different descent angles aren't the same shot. One of them is going to need more green to work with.
